The Color of Medical Uniforms Can Affect Patient Perception

Posted by Dr Carolina Hernandez, MD, MSc, MBA on

Color psychology dates back over 3,000 years, when the Egyptians assigned special properties to each color based on the colors of nature. For example, red signified power, blue symbolized purified water and fertility, and yellow represented eternity.

Today, psychological studies have evolved to show that colors can influence our behavior and emotions in various situations.

Recently, researchers from the University of North Carolina applied these insights to clinical patients to understand how their perception of healthcare professionals would change based on the color of their medical uniforms. The results highlighted the existence of stereotypes, reaffirmed common perceptions about certain colors, and confirmed which outfits and shades are preferred by patients.

The importance of color in healthcare environments is undeniable, especially when the context of these environments can bring strong emotions for both staff and patients, as well as their families.

Let's explore the findings of this study and reasons why healthcare institutions should seek guidance when choosing the colors of their uniforms and equipment.

Colors of Uniforms Preferred by Patients

The American study interviewed patients of all ages, with 61% between 31 and 60 years old, 21% between 18 and 30, and 26% over 60. The researchers showed each patient photos of men and women in medical uniforms, in colors chosen based on what is popular in TV shows: green, light blue, dark blue, and black.

Choosing these colors was not random; the researchers recognized that not all patients had been in hospitals before, but most had seen healthcare professionals in uniforms on TV.

For nearly half of the patients of all ages, men and women wearing green uniforms were perceived as surgeons. On the other hand, blue uniforms on men and women (56% and 48%) were seen as conveying kindness and care across all age groups. Additionally, most felt that women wearing blue were very trustworthy.

In psychological terms, these perceptions align with what each color represents. For instance, blue is associated with intelligence, loyalty, and serenity. It is also the favorite color of most consumers.

The Importance of Guidance in Defining Institutional Colors

Institutional colors in healthcare, like any brand in any industry, can affect how those seeking services perceive it. For example, color is a critical element when consumers recognize a brand.

Although we’ve learned what patients think about medical uniform colors, it’s essential to finalize appropriate colors for patients that also identify medical professionals with their organization.

Even though blue is a public favorite, choosing the perfect color is not an easy task: there are 111 shades of blue! That’s why you should seek guidance from your institutional medical uniform brand before selecting the perfect color for your uniforms and equipment.

Application of Bold Colors for Specific Professionals

While blue is the top choice for both patients and consumers, using other shades strategically can also generate positive perceptions. For professionals with their own practices and no color requirements, there are no limits to choosing their medical uniforms.

For example, pediatricians should consider color psychology for children. They prefer vibrant colors like lime green, which conveys feelings of balance and nerve control.

On the other hand, colors like pink are positively associated with tenderness and delicacy—an excellent choice for a dentist!

After learning more about the meaning of colors and what they can evoke in patients, it’s clear that success lies in the details. It may seem like a matter of personal taste or chance, but the colors we use in our medical gowns and uniforms can make patients perceive us more positively and strongly associate us with our healthcare institution.
